UN601 – Control, Instrumentation and Electrical Systems

June 20, 2027 @ 9:00 am

About the Course

This course introduces the fundamental control, instrumentation, and electrical systems used in CANDU nuclear power plants, beginning with an overview of plant dynamics across key systems such as the reactor, heat transport, moderator, steam generator, turbine, and electrical generator. Building on this foundation, students explore the control and regulation functions within these systems, examine instrumentation and measurement techniques, and study control strategies supported by time- and frequency-domain performance analysis. The course covers controller design and tuning, instrumentation calibration, and the operation of CANDU plants in both normal and alternate modes. Students are also introduced to advanced technologies—including distributed control systems and Fieldbus communication protocols—along with detailed examination of plant electrical systems, generator modeling, and the dynamic interactions between CANDU plants, the wider power grid, and various load conditions.

In this course you will be learning from Dr. Jing Jiang
