UNENE Programs – Frequently Asked Questions
Note: This is an unofficial guide. In case of any differences, the official University Graduate Calendar rules apply.
Which programs can I choose from?
We offer two part-time programs for working professionals in the nuclear industry:
Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) – Complete 10 courses in five years, or 8 courses plus an Engineering Project.
Diploma Program – Complete 4 courses in three years.
Both programs share the same high-quality courses and instructors — the difference is in how far you want to take your studies.
What are the core courses everyone must take?
1. UN 0502 – Nuclear Plant Systems and Operations
2. UN 0802 – Nuclear Reactor Analysis
3. UN 0803 – Nuclear Reactor Safety Design
4. UN 0804 – Nuclear Reactor Heat Transport System Design
💡 Tip: These are usually offered every other year — plan your schedule early.
What’s the Engineering Project and why would I do it?
Available only in the M.Eng. program, the Engineering Project lets you tackle a real-world, industry-relevant challenge.
✔ Can be completed at your workplace (with approval)
✔ Requires both an industrial and an academic supervisor
✔ Counts as two courses
✔ Best started after five courses
✔ Completed over two terms
Funding: UNENE doesn’t provide funding, but many students get employer support — especially if the project benefits the organization.
How much time will I spend on each course?
Plan for 2–3 times that amount for studying, assignments, and projects.
How will I be graded?
Grading varies by professor but usually includes a mix of assignments, projects, tests, and exams.
You must earn at least a B- to pass.
If you fail:
- Your case is reviewed by the Programme Director
- One retake may be allowed if performance is otherwise good
- Two failures mean removal from the program
Can I drop a course?
What if I miss a weekend?
If you can’t attend, let your professor know in advance and review the recorded lecture using Distance Education tools
How do I get in?
M.Eng. – Apply through McMaster, Waterloo, Western, Ontario Tech, or Queen’s.
Diploma – Apply through McMaster or Ontario Tech.
Requirements:
- Honours degree in engineering, science, or math (B average preferred)
- Academic references (or qualified professional references if needed)
- Proof of English proficiency if applicable (TOEFL, MELAB, or equivalent)
How much does it cost?
$2,250 per course + incidental fees (varies by university)
UNENE doesn’t offer scholarships, but many employers cover tuition if the course is passed.
Where will I take classes?
In-person: Durham College – Whitby Campus, over four alternate weekends.
Distance Education:
- Live via Zoom (Canvas?)
- Recordings available
- One in-person weekend + final exam required
- GTA students are expected to attend all weekends in person
How serious is academic integrity?
Violations can lead to course failure or removal from the program.
Some universities require Academic Integrity and Accessibility training; if not, UNENE provides its own mini-course. [Is this accurate? Create a web page for the UNENE Academic Integrity Policy and link from here]
Can I switch between the M.Eng. and the Diploma?
After graduation, you can’t transfer credits between programs (no “double-dipping”).
