Time

9:00 AM – 3:00 PM ET

Location

Delivered live online via Zoom

Course Description

This short course delivers a condensed, high-level overview of the core topics covered in the full UN806 Nuclear Fuel Engineering program. Participants will explore the nuclear fuel cycle, fuel design and components, fuel manufacturing processes, in-reactor behaviour, failure modes and effects analyses, fuel performance under both design-basis and severe accident conditions, and the framework for fuel qualification. The course provides a focused, accessible introduction to the fundamentals of nuclear fuel engineering.

Who Can Join

This course is only available for working professionals

What to Expect

COURSE OUTCOME
  • Describe the nuclear fuel cycle from uranium mining to fuel disposal
  • Understand the design, structure, and components of nuclear fuel
  • Explain fuel behavior under normal reactor operating conditions
  • Identify key factors affecting fuel performance and integrity
  • Recognize fuel performance under abnormal and accident conditions
  • Understand basic fuel safety considerations and regulatory requirements
LITERATURE (for reference)
    TOPICS COVERED:
    • Overview of the nuclear fuel cycle
    • Uranium mining, milling, and conversion
    • Fuel enrichment processes
    • Fuel fabrication and assembly design
    • Fuel materials and structure
    • In-reactor fuel behavior (e.g., temperature, pressure, fission effects)
    • Fuel performance and degradation mechanisms
    • Failure mechanisms and basic failure analysis (FMEA concepts)
    • Fuel behavior under design basis and severe accident conditions
    • Fuel qualification and testing

    Evaluation

               1. Certificate of Participation

               2. Certificate of Completion

Option A simply requires participation in this two-day course, while Option B also requires an evaluation in the form of a test. The test will be issued the following weekend to students opting for Option B, which will involve a series of questions based on content covered in this short course and will be returned to the instructor via e-mail at the end of the exam (i.e., no later than 15 min following the end of the exam). The instructor will be in attendance on Zoom during the exam in case if any students have clarification questions.  Student questions will be posted using chat messaging.
