Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive overview of nuclear waste sources and management strategies, with a focus on spent fuel from CANDU reactors. Students will examine the full waste management lifecycle—including characterization, processing, packaging, transport, storage, and long-term disposal—alongside the regulatory frameworks guiding low-, intermediate-, and high-level waste. The course covers current practices for spent fuel storage, options for permanent disposal in deep geological repositories, and international approaches with relevance to Canada. Key topics include waste container design and failure mechanisms, engineered barriers, geological site requirements, and the computational tools used in performance assessments. Real-world case studies and global examples illustrate regulatory, technical, and community considerations, as well as decision-making tools for managing non-fuel radioactive wastes.
