Diploma Program

UNENE Diploma in Nuclear Engineering

The UNENE Diploma offers graduate-level training for professionals seeking to broaden their nuclear engineering knowledge while working full-time. Delivered jointly by McMaster University and Ontario Tech University, the part-time program runs outside of working hours and can be completed in three years.

Students complete four UNENE courses, at least two core courses, earning a minimum grade of B- in each. The program blends theory and practice in:

Enhanced problem solving
Multidisciplinary knowledge
Safety and risk analysis
Fundamental nuclear engineering concepts

Graduates gain expertise in at least two core disciplines plus two areas of specialization, applying this knowledge to the safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants.

Program Structure:

Core Courses (minimum of 2 required):

UN502 – Nuclear Power Plant Systems & Operations

An in-depth look at plant systems, operations, and safety protocols.

Who’s it for:

The UNENE Diploma is designed for working professionals in the nuclear industry who want to enhance their expertise without committing to the full M.Eng. program. Applicants must hold an honours degree in engineering, science, or mathematics with a minimum B average (or equivalent) as determined by the admitting university. Relevant work experience may also be considered. The program is intended primarily for Canadian students and is not suitable for most international applicants.

Program delivery:

The diploma is offered on a part-time basis to accommodate full-time professionals. Live classes are typically held on alternate weekends at a facility near Toronto and are also available via interactive distance learning. All sessions are recorded, allowing students to review material or catch up if a class is missed.

Delivery

Our programs are designed for working professionals in the nuclear industry. Live courses are typically offered over four alternate weekends at a facility near the majority of students (usually east of Toronto). To support remote learners, all courses are delivered via live distance-learning tools and are recorded for review — so you can catch up or revisit sessions as needed.
