SNC-Lavalin contracted for CANDU new build prep work in Romania

Preparatory work begins for two new CANDU units at the Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica Cernavoda site as part of Romania’s decarbonization strategy.

NOV. 26, 2021 – Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) announced the advancement of CANDU Units 3 & 4 at the Cernavoda site to the preparatory phase. The project company announced, Nov. 25, that it had signed its first contract with Candu Energy, a subsidiary of UNENE industry member SNC-Lavalin.

Candu Energy will provide engineering services to update some documentation for the CANDU project, including updates to safety design guides and licensing documents.

The development of CANDU units in Romania will bring the country clean, cost-effective energy and is anticipated to create about 19,00 new direct and indirect jobs.

Cernavoda Units 1 and 2 were commissioned in 1996 and 2007 and provide about 20 per cent of the country’s electricity. SNN is also planning for refurbishment of the original two units.
